Merry Christmas.
Just some little facts about our family as the year ends.
John-Luke (almost 18 mos.) is the happiest and snuggliest little boy to have around. I constantly get comments on how happy and joyful he is and it is true. Johnny-lu loves to copy everything that James does and he has no fear. He is also very ticklish and is totally a daddy's boy (he won't have anything to do with me when Brian is around). He loves music, snuggling, singing, dancing and eating. He also loves going to bed when he is tired (dream child)! We are so lucky that he chose to come join our family.
James (3 years old. Already?) is such a lively and energetic kid. He loves music and physical activities. He goes to jardin d'enfants (preschool) 3 mornings a week and loves it. He also participates in a mommy-son gymnastics class that he loves as well. James enjoys reading, making messes, playing with his daddy and brother. James also spent 6 days in the hospital this Summer with Salmonella in his blood but is all recovered. He is (mostly) potty trained day and night (better at night than during the day). And he is picking up some French at school and church. He can sing "Je Suis Enfant de Dieu" (I am a child of God) in french beautifully.
Rebecca has had a year full of school studies and baby boys. She just graduated with her Bachelors from TWU with a 3.773 GPA! She is currently a ward missionary and the nursery leader. She has made great progress in the French language and is now proficient enough for most situations.
Brian is still enjoying his work and has received recognition for helping to win a large client for the Geneva office where he works. He is currently the ward mission leader. He loves his weekends when he can spend time with the family.
Together we all enjoyed traveling and have visited Germany, Austria and Hungary this year. We also took a parent/child music class together on Saturday mornings which the boys loved! We are still enjoying our little European adventure. This has been a good year.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. We hope that you are well and that 2011 will bring you much joy, prosperity and health.
TOOT TOOT!!! (The last one).
I just wanted to post that I have finished this semester and I got 2 A's again. I also graduated!!! I am done so I will no longer be complaining about how busy I am with my studies (at least until I decide to go back for a masters).
Also, I wanted to say that I finished with a 3.773 GPA (grade point average)!!! For those of you not familiar with the U.S. grading system you should know that 3.773 is very good!
I am tooting my own horn for the last time and I must say that I am very proud of myself. If anyone else is thinking about going back to school I would highly recommend it! (Even if you have kids).
I did plan on going to my graduation ceremony so I could post some pictures but we were delayed in Geneva and missed our connection in London so we got to Dallas as the ceremony was ending. (Sad hu?) At least we made it here in one piece. I will start updating after I get home from the states in January. Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! (Happy other holidays that you all may celebrate as well).

Too busy!
I know I have been slow to update. I have been super busy. School will be getting over in a couple of weeks. And I mean OVER, as in I will finally graduate! I also started a new blog to keep a journal of a diet that I recently did. I just couldn't deal with too many things at once so this blog went on the back burner while I was on my diet. It was a huge success and I am very proud of myself. If you would like to read about the diet then you can check it out here. I will hopefully get back to posting next week when I have a minute but for now I have homework to catch up on. Until then.
Oh, and I forgot to toot my own horn but I did get 2 A's for my Summer semester despite all the craziness that was happening at the time. I'm hoping for the same this semester but I must admit I am not nearly as into this semester as in the past. I just want it to be over. Oh, and I will be walking in the graduation ceremony on December 17 in Denton, TX (we fly in the night before). Yipee for me!

Bright Side
On the bright side of James' hospital stay. The first night that we were there on of my best friends from high school (Jiselle DeCow) was James' nurse. She was the only super close friend from high school that I had lost contact with. It was great to see her. And it was weird because I knew that I was going to see her before it happened. Brian was at the hospital with James (I had gone home to get some homework to work on while James slept) and he called me and said "Guess who is James' nurse tonight?" I just knew right then and I immediately answered "Jiselle!" I had not seen her for about 6 years so there was no reason for me to think of her but I knew. I often think of people that I haven't spoken to for a while right before they make contact with me again. Funny how that happens.
And, another bright side to this story is that Salmonella, once treated, leaves no lasting damage to the body. There are many other diseases that can leave a child with many serious problems long after the disease is gone. Salmonella is not one of them. Once you get rid of it you are better and so now James is 100% himself (except that he is afraid of all doctors now for good reason).

The Rest of the Utah Story.
We ended up trading off going back and forth between the house and the hospital. Brian's employer was very understanding considering he had just had 5 days of bereavement leave. He was working as much as possible from the hospital when James slept. We took turns staying with James but I think Brian got the worst of it. I was trying to make sure that Johnny was still getting nursed although this really helped with getting him ready to be weaned. My mom was a lifesaver as she was able to help us with Johnny while we were with James or sleeping or keeping up on work and homework. My mom kept Johnny busy with gardening. The mulberry tree in my parent's yard was dishing up lots and Johnny decided he loves mulberries.
After a long discussion with the CDC and other infectious disease specialists (yes, the Center for Disease Control) the doctors decided to keep James on the same antibiotic that he was allergic too. (We had to wait till his next dose of antibiotics to be sure that it was the antibiotic he was allergic to since he had so many different medicines in him the previous time). Sure enough it was the antibiotics and we had to use Benadryl once again. The doctors decided that it was best to keep him on the same antibiotic and simply pre-treat with oral Benadryl and a couple other antihistamines 30 minutes before his antibiotics. It worked. Poor James insisted that we sleep with him in the hospital bed.
This is the small room that James' was quarantined to for 5 of his 6 day stay. They finally got the okay to let him out after they tested his poop to make sure there was no Salmonella in it. Salmonella is very contagious so it is standard protocol to isolate anyone with it. Luckily for us (because we were around so many other people) James was not contagious except through his blood.
After 6 days in the hospital we finally got to take James back to my parents house. We decided to stay in Utah to finish the rest of the I.V. treatments at home. The home-care nurse came by and showed us exactly how to do the I.V. and how to keep it clean. This was our attempt at keeping it dry to give our dirty boy a bath.
My sister, Karen, sent two of her kids up to my parent's house to play with my kids when James got out of the hospital. It was great. It was also good for her since she had to have surgery (didn't tell any of us until after it was over! Dork!) to remove an enormous ovarian cyst (benign).
Her daughter, Elsie, told me she wanted to cut her hair like mine but didn't think her mom would let her. I called and asked my sister if it would be okay. She said yes. We took her to the salon and cut enough off to donate to Locks of Love. Here she is before with her long hair.
And after, with her short new cut! She loved it. I think she looks beautiful either way but I love the short cut.
James playing with cousin Max. You wouldn't even know he had a PICC line in his arm except that we had to call the home nurse 3 times because of problems with it. You see, they placed it right at his elbow. And that wouldn't have been such a problem if it had been the other arm. Nope, it was the arm that he uses to suck on his fingers and so it is constantly being bent up. This caused his line to bleed which caused the bandage to get compromised and therefore need cleaning and replacing. What a pain! James did not like this at all since it was irritating his skin. They finally double taped it all into place and it stuck for the final few days.
Aren't those boys adorable?
Brian and his mom and our boys.
Dorks! Avoiding the camera.
We got James' PICC line remove the day before we came home. We flew gratefully back home the 15th of July, 3 weeks after our originally scheduled departure. We were so happy to be home! Oh, and I still got straight A's that semester (divine intervention).
I had a little chat with the department of health about all the places that James could have picked up Salmonella. Seems that it is pretty much everywhere and all the doctors told us it was a fluke that he had gotten it into his blood that way. So we will never know how it happened. All we can be sure of is that it probably happened 48 to 72 hours before he showed symptoms.
Let me tell you that we hope to never relive the experience of having a child in the hospital like that again. It was very stressful and I think I gained about 15 lbs. between stressing and eating crap food on the way to or from the hospital. It wasn't exactly how we wanted to end our trip to Utah but I suppose these things happen and I'm not surprised that my 2 year old boy (who touches everything always) finally caught something nasty. Here's to hoping it won't happen again anytime soon!
Johnny's Birthday!
On Sunday, June 27, 2010, Johnny turned 1 year old! I can't believe how fast the time has flown with #2. Johnny is the sweetest, most happy, baby ever. I regularly get comments on how happy and smiley he is. It is true. He even smiles and laughs when I put him to bed. I could not have asked for an easier baby ever! Fortunately, we were able to be with a lot of family for Johnny's birthday and we celebrated with a cake and party at Brian's mom's house. I made another home made carrot cake but this time I also made some whipped cream for the top! Here is Brian bringing the cake to Johnny as we sung "Happy Birthday."
Grandma Shelley (aka, Brian's mom).
Uncle Trevor (Brian's siblings are ALWAYS on their phones. They are even worse than my mom and that is really saying something).
Aunt MaryJean and Aunt Michelle (both on the phone)!
Daddy and James (not sure what happened to James here).
Cousin Mason.
Cousin Rylie.
Here is Johnny enjoying his cake. He especially liked the whipped cream.

Uncle Trevor again. Trying not to smile.
Overall, it was a great day to celebrate Johnny's Birthday. We were glad that so many family members were there to celebrate with us too.

Week by week 52
(June 20-26). What a crazy week. Sadly, not the craziest week we had while in Utah. It started out by going back up to Brian's moms house (not really crazy at all there). We got there in the evening so that we would be there when Brian arrived the next day from Geneva. We found out that Brian's sister, Stephanie, was in town for a crazy 24 hour relay race and so we made sure she came over for a few minutes to say hi to the boys. Steph and James. Steph with Johnny.
Unfortunately, she had to leave about an hour before Brian got in from Geneva. But the boys were sure glad to see her and they were so happy to see their daddy! James was showing Brian his new guitar and Johnny was just laughing happy to have daddy back.
He was all smiles for Brian. (He usually is).
Brian and his mom decided they needed to go visit his Grandma that afternoon before a scheduled party for Johnny at my parents house. I went down to Bountiful with the boys to help get things going. My new haircut. I got bangs!!! I love them but Brian doesn't so much. I deliberately went super short so it could grow in and I could just have it cut at Christmastime again. I still haven't had a haircut in Geneva. I can't pay the prices.
For some reason my family loves to feed my kids. They are constantly being fed by an aunt or by my dad. Fruit from Edpa.
It just so happened to be Father's Day as well so here is my dad opening his present from us kids while Pink gives him bunny ears.
Johnny's Birthday cake (we were celebrating a bit early because we were planning on leaving Utah on the 23rd. It was homemade, gluten-free, carrot cake with no frosting. Carrots came from Grandma's garden.
Pink waking from her nap on the couch.
Grandma (not on the phone? A miracle!).
Jax giving his momma a kiss.
Avocado and corn from Aunt Karen. Not even an hour after his fruit from Edpa.
Johnny's cake.
He couldn't be bothered to eat it in his chair. He wanted it to go.
Brian was not able to make the party because when he went to see his Grandmother they found that she had had another stroke (we think) and was not responsive. He was helping his mom.
Geoff and Emily and Alex and Hayley (and Oscar) came into town too for Emily's sister's wedding. The days were beautiful so we spent much time outside.James enjoyed "walking" Oscar.
Brian and Geoff being lazy in the yard while the kids played.
James had a blast playing with Geoff.
He wasn't very successful at getting his hand though.
Playing in the park by Grandma's house.
We got to see Brian's siblings this trip as most everyone came rushing down to see their Grandma. We were supposed to leave on June 23rd but when we got to the airport there was such bad weather in Chicago that they told us to come back the next day. Poor James had woken up so early that he fell asleep in the car on the way back to my parent's house.
The next day we decided that I would stay in Utah with the kids and Brian would fly home to work because his Grandma was really not doing well. Brian left Thursday thinking he would miss Johnny's 1st birthday. He got home Friday and his Grandma passed away that morning so he flew back immediately on Saturday (he was in Switzerland for 18 hours) to be with the family. At least he got here in time for Johnny's birthday.
This is the end of my weekly posts. Johnny's first year is documented and I will now be posting as necessary.
Work in progress
